Coon Creek Kennels
Welcome to our website.
We are Kevin and Lois Luthenauer, and Coon Creek Kennels is absolutely "green" as a kennel, but we are dedicated to the advancement of Hunt Test and Field Trial Retrievers.
Our main concentration will always be towards Chocolate labs.
We began our journey with a dog Kevin bought out of the classified papers - a chocolate labrador retriever pup purchased in 2005 for all the wrong reasons except that he wanted a companion who hunted. As "Luthenauers Sir Buster Brown" began to develop, so did Kevin's training abilities. Kevin began working with a local training group in Kingston, Tennessee. Folks in that group have routinely run dogs in AKC hunting tests and field trial events, and one has even become a professional trainer. When Lois entered the picture in 2006, Kevin introduced her to the sport and shortly thereafter, she was hooked. Under the tutelage of a local pro trainer and breeder who is a very dear friend now, John Broucek (Troublesome Retrievers), we developed our skills and began wanting more than just an average hunting dog.
So the first step was AKC hunt tests. Buster progressed through the ranks of the hunt tests and was running at the MH level with 3 passes when his ability to mark began falling off drastically. Upon vet diagnosis he was found to have PRA and be a carrier. He now lives comfortably on the couch. We purchased a piece of heaven in Morgan County, TN we call Coon Creek Acres owing its name to a creek running beside it. Soon we were looking for another lab to run in hunt tests with Buster's early retirement and we purchased "Luthenauers Troublesome Coon Creek Susie" (Susie) from John Broucek and began training her for the upcoming task of Hunt Tests. We decided to purchase a pup from proven Hunt test and Field trial lines with proven and demonstrated health clearances, since we found that failing to do so could end up with a lot of heartache and wasted hard work.
Lois and I trained Susie up through transition and the double "T" before sending her to Jody Ware's Razor Sharp Retrievers. Jody is a renowned professional hunt test dog trainer and we decided he was the best option to continue her training. Even as rank amatuers, we recognized Susie's talent early on and knew she would advance best in the hands of a pro, and Jody is the "BEST" in our book at what he does. Jody took Susie through her SH, MH and ultimately to the 2012 Master National where, our Susie, along with 220 out of 721 dogs who started the 2012 Master National, completed her 1st Master National Event.
As Susie was progressing up the hunt test ranks a friend and fellow trainer, Dick Lamping, from Idaho heard Kevin grousing about having to retire his HT dog due to having PRA and he offered him another HT (chocolate what else?) pup from his HT dog "Dicks High Flying Pin-Tail MH" (Pini) and out of breeding between Pini and FC AFC Land Ahoy (Pirate). We jumped at the chance and then had another addition to our newly adopted name, Coon Creek Kennels. We named him "Coon Creeks Backwater Quack Head", affectionately known as "Woodie." Woodie has progressed through the HT ranks and has achieved his Master Hunter certification at Middle Tennessee Amatuer Retriever Clubs Spring Hunt Test on 5-17-14.
We have also added another member to the pack "Watermarks Troubles Bonnie". She is an older female that was owned by Mary Tatum and John Broucek who was retired and just needed a good home. She has one now. Welcome to our family Bonnie! She carries excellent blood lines and some of her pups have achived the ranks of AFC and FC and she has put many many pups on the derby list and into the all age ranks. We will breed Bonnie one last time this fall. The stud is yet to be determined.
In the mean time Good Hunting and Good Training.
